Using apt-cacher-ng to handle deb files instead of squid

E-mail Print PDF

Having a squid proxy server transparently caching your websites can speed up loading of web-pages on the network. However it can be annoying when dealing with Ubuntu (and Debian) repositories, especially if people on the network use different repositories, as it just downloads the same files for each repository.

Apt-cacher-ng is an application that is able to cache the files for Ubuntu and Debian repositories across repositories, so if a file is cached from one server and someone requests the same file from another server, apt-cacher-ng just returns the file from the cache. It also has additional features (like adding pre- downloaded packages to the cache) that save bandwidth and an interface to monitor the bandwidth saved.

Translation-en_AU keeps failing

E-mail Print PDF

I kept having the problem of when I did an "apt-get update" or "aptitude update" (or even using update manager / synaptic to update the package lists), apt would keep on trying to download the packages for Translation-en_AU. And they would keep failing, not only increasing the time it took to run an update, but also confusing you about whether it was working properly (and you had too keep telling yourself that it as alright for these packages to fail.

Adjust Visual Studio Security Settings

E-mail Print PDF

If you try and use a Visual Studio (including VS C#) project that ison a network drive, there is a very good chance you will be met with amessage warning you that the location is not trusted. After that, somethings will not work with the project, no matter how hard you try. There is a way to raise the permissions level in the .NET settings sothat network drives are trusted. After this Visual Studio will trustthe network location and allow you to work from a network drive.

SD card suddenly mounted as read-only

E-mail Print PDF

I have an SD card and sone day I discovered that it was read only. I checked the lock on the side of the card and it was off (if it is on, then the card will be read only, no matter what you do with our OS). This problem also applies to thumb drives, etc (though probably not the lock thing) - any FAT formatted drives.

Using Ubuntu 8.04, though it would probably apply to all versions of Linux

Hebrews 4:12
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
